Sam Worthington learnt courage from his mother Jeanne’s battle with ovarian cancer

Posted by Anne in Apr 10,2014 with No Comments

SAM Worthington has opened up about his own mother Jeanne’s battle with ovarian cancer in a bid to raise further awareness about the disease.

“In Australia, one woman dies from ovarian cancer every 10 hours. Mum’s cancer battle struck at the heart of life and death for me. She said, ‘I’m not going to let this disease control how I live’,” Worthington told GQ, in an edition which goes on sale on Monday.

“I might not have agreed with the way Mum chose to handle her treatment at the time but, she taught me that the best way to help her was to stop being all ‘woe is me’, so we did, and everyone in our family got stronger by staying positive together,” he said.

The extremely private 37-year-old star has rarely spoken before about his family life or mother’s illness. She recovered from the disease but to this day, it has affected Worthington enormously.

“When I was young my parents were these titanic, infallible figures. But Mum’s illness, and Dad’s battles with diabetes and heart attacks had a ripple effect on me — reminding me of my own mortality and that these illnesses are genetic. Self-awareness and early detection are key [to finding ovarian cancer], so that’s what we’re encouraging with White Shirt Day: don’t think twice, support the campaign on May 1,” Worthington said.

The actor is one of a group of male stars supporting the white shirt campaign, with others including David Wenham and Don Hany also appearing in a GQ fashion shoot based on the White Shirt Campaign.

The campaign supports the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) with 100 per cent of the gross proceeds from the sale of the Witchery white shirts donated directly to the foundation. [Source]

Director James Cameron announced that Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will reprise their roles from the 2009 blockbuster in three more movies.

“Jake Sully is rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength,” Cameron said in a statement.

“Zoe captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they’ll be returning with us to Pandora,” his statement continued.

Sam Worthington arrested on disorderly conduct charge in Atlanta

Posted by Anne in Nov 06,2012 with No Comments

Sam Worthington was on the hook, then he was off the hook, after an allegedly drunken scuffle Saturday night in Atlanta that led to his arrest on suspicion of disorderly conduct.

The “Avatar” star was refused entrance to a restaurant because he appeared intoxicated and didn’t have proper identification to get into the place, TMZ reported Monday. Worthington then became disorderly, according to a police report obtained by the website, and allegedly pushed doorman Jerry Link twice.

The doorman in turn nailed the actor with pepper spray and cuffed him until cops arrived, the report said. And after the blast? Worthington told Link, “I’m a DEA agent,” according to TMZ.

Worthington plays a DEA agent in the film “Ten,” which he’s shooting in Atlanta and which costars Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Federal fabrication aside, Worthington was out of trouble almost as fast as he got into it when charges were dismissed Monday morning after Link didn’t show in court. The bouncer, however, maintains nobody told him about the court date.

People confirmed the incident with a restaurant manager who would not comment. [Source]
