Knightley, Worthington drama to close Toronto fest
Posted by Anne • No Comments »

Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington are slated to be the closing attractions at September’s Toronto International Film Festival.

“Pirates of the Caribbean” actress Knightley and “Avatar” leading man Worthington star alongside Eva Mendes in the marital drama “Last Night,” announced Tuesday as the closing-night film for the festival, which runs Sept. 9-19.

Other premieres newly added to the lineup include director Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” a drama about mortality starring Matt Damon; Dustin Lance Black’s “What’s Wrong With Virginia,” with Jennifer Connelly as a mentally troubled woman whose son tosses a wrench into the election campaign of a local politician (Ed Harris); and Dan Rush’s “Everything Must Go,” featuring Will Ferrell as a motivational speaker staging a colossal lawn sale after his life falls apart.

Director Danny Boyle, whose “Slumdog Millionaire” played Toronto in 2008 and went on to win best picture at the Academy Awards, returns to the festival with “127 Hours,” a mountain-climbing survival tale starring James Franco. Read full article.

Avatar returns to movie screens Aug. 27
Posted by Anne • No Comments »

Film fans who haven’t seen Avatar yet — or who can’t wait to see it again — now have their big date: It’s coming back to theatres on Aug. 27.

The re-release on 3-D and Imax screens will include eight minutes of new footage.

Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time, has already brought in $2.7 billion worldwide, and 20th Century Fox points out that it’s also the top-selling Blu-ray Disc of all time.

“Since — and largely as of result of — Avatar’s release last December, the number of available digital 3-D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3-D will now have that opportunity,” Fox said in a news release. It said the studio has been inundated with requests to re-release the movie in theatres in 3-D.

It quoted Cameron as saying, “Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we’re making that possible. Avatar: Special Edition will be exclusively in 3-D, and will have eight minutes of never before seen footage, including new creatures and action scenes. Whether you already love the movie, or you’ve never seen it, with this Special Edition, you’ll be seeing it like never before.”

Fox has picked a good weekend: The only competition is a horror movie called The Last Exorcism, a faux documentary, and Going The Distance, a rom-com with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. [Source]

This week’s cover: Sam Worthington talks ‘Clash of the Titans’
Posted by Anne • No Comments »

Finding an actor to play the lead role of Perseus — the demigod son of Zeus — in the new Clash of the Titans (out Friday) proved a difficult task for the mortals working on the film. “The studio said, ‘You don’t need Brad Pitt, but find somebody interesting,’” says producer Basil Iwanyk. “We interviewed every really thin actor in his 20s, but we kept asking, Can these guys swing a sword? Can these guys jump on a horse?” Sam Worthington had recently finished shooting Terminator Salvation and Avatar, so there wasn’t any question the rugged 33-year-old could handle a weapon while riding a flying stallion. But the actor didn’t know if he wanted the part. “I wasn’t very familiar with the original movie, so I had to make sure it was something worth rebooting,” he says. “Sometimes you can remake something when the original is fine. But when I looked at the 1981 movie, I knew straightaway we could improve on it. Especially the visual effects. Stop-motion was great in its time, but I thought we could ramp it up a bit.” Read full article.

ShoWest honors Sam Worthington
Posted by Anne • No Comments »

Sam Worthington, star of the upcoming 3D tentpole “Clash of the Titans” as well as the blockbuster “Avatar,” will be honored as male star of the year at ShoWest 2010.

Worthington will be feted March 18 at an awards gala set to close the annual exhibition confab. ShoWest opens March 15 at the Bally’s and Paris hotels in Las Vegas.

“Having been handpicked by James Cameron to star in the highest-grossing film of all time Sam Worthington has taken Hollywood by storm and is not looking back,” ShoWest managing director Robert Sunshine said.

Warner Bros. releases “Titans” on April 2. The film depicts a struggle between mythical gods and mortals, including Worthington’s Perseus. [Source]
